Obituary for Hurston "Jim" Boyington
Funeral Services for Hurston James (Jim) Boyington, Sr, 85, of Cookeville, will be held Wednesday, January 3, 2018 at 1 pm, from the chapel of Crest Lawn Funeral Home in Cookeville. Interment will follow in Crest Lawn Memorial Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 11 a.m.- 1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Hurston James (Jim) Boyington, Sr passed away Friday, December 29, 2017 at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
Jim was born on December 31, 1931 in Rabon, AL.
Jim lived in Pensacola, FL for 65 years before moving to Cookeville, TN. He happily called and considered Cookeville his home.
He served in the U.S. Air Force after his honorable discharge he began his 37 year career with the U.S. Postal Service. He graduated from the U.S. Postal Service Management Academy. Jim received numerous awards for meritorious service while working with the Postal Service.
He belonged to the Hadji Shrine Temple of Pensacola, FL and later the Al Menah Shrine in Nashville, TN. He was a member of the Cookeville Masonic Lodge No. 266 and Scottish Rite of Freemasonry of Nashville. He was also a member of NARFE.
Jim was a member of the First Baptist Church of Cookeville, TN. He was very active in his church doing Campground Ministry in Townsend, TN, and serving meals at the Cookeville Rescue Mission. He also delivered Meals-On-Wheels and volunteered at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
Jim enjoyed the outdoors, traveling, and seeing the country in his motor home. He had an intense fondness for animals, he loved his garden, and treasured his time spent caring for his yard. Spending time with his family was very important to him as well as taking the grandchildren on trips in his RV. In addition to his love for all animals Jim had a great admiration for the Great Bald Eagle, and over the years he obtained a vast collection of eagle memorabilia.
Jim is survived by his wife, Brenda; daughter, Lisa Boyington of Georgetown, TX; son, Walter Boyington, of Cookeville, TN; four grandchildren: Ashley Boyington, of Gainesboro; Zachary Dodson, of Red Boiling Springs; Bill Boyington, of Hutto, TX and Katie Boyington-Ward of Georgetown, TX; one sister, Jean Dyer of Fairhope, AL; and five great-grandchildren, Garrett Dukes, Braiden Dodson, Makayla, Rylan, and Charlotte Ward.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, James and Irene Ross Boyington; a son, Hurston James Boyington Jr and wife, Mimi; a daughter, Elizabeth Boyington; four brothers, Hayward, Carnice, Dayton and Hoyle Boyington; and one sister, Molvier Steele.
Pallbearers will be family and friends.
Reverends Scott McKinney and Bill Stone will conduct the service.
