Obituary for Bob Melgar

Bob Melgar
Bob Melgar, age 71 of Monterey, Tennessee passed away from this life Tuesday, July 17, 2018 at his beloved home on the Cumberland Plateau

He was born in New York City, NY on June 1, 1947 to parents Robert and Rosalie Melgar.

Bob is survived by his wife of 26 years, Debbie (Gothelf) Melgar, he was also loved by his children: Bobby and Laura Melgar, Brandon and Alissa Hegele, Star Melgar, and James Melgar.
He is also survived by his sister, Margie and Rene Cruz of Florida.

Bob was predeceased by his brother, Daniel Melgar.

Bob’s career reflected his life, he was rock solid-someone you could always count on and yet it was his personality that captivated you with just one look. He proudly served as a Sergeant in the Air Force during the Vietnam War from 1966-1972. As an Air Cargo Specialist, Bob was responsible for ensuring the aircraft loaded and offloaded as quickly as possible so as not to become a target on the ground. Bob carried that commitment for safety and entered law enforcement following his honorable discharge. Bob served the community for 31 years as a Patrolman/Detective with the Miami-Dade Police Department. His favorite role was that of Community Policing when he rode around on a bicycle to serve and protect. Having that face to face connection with the people he saw every day led him to his passion for capturing special moments on film. Never without his camera, Bob’s retirement focused on his great passion of photography. He would travel across our great county to capture the very essence of Americana; covered bridges, barns, old trucks. Through his lens, Bob took you to the most breathtaking of views. Somehow, he turned an ordinary waterfall into a magical oasis just waiting for the elusive unicorn. He took you to snow capped mountains giving you a bird’s eye view of wild horses and scenic landscapes. And yet, his most favorite subjects to photograph were his 4 grandchildren who knew him as Papa: Robert Melgar (Gordo), Rory Hegele, Hannah Melgar and Jackson Hegele. Bob was fiercely protective of his community, his family, and his friends. He will be missed every day by all those whose lives he touched either personally or through his camera lens.

Please join Bob’s family for a Celebration of Life Gathering on Saturday, July 21, 2018 from 1:00pm-3:30pm at Crest Lawn Funeral Home. Military Honors will be provided by the Veterans Honor Guard.
