Obituary

Carol Hillard Engle, age 67, formerly of Ypsilanti, Michigan passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, on Wednesday, May 29, 2019.

Carol was born March 29, 1952 in Jackson, Michigan to George and Josephine Hillard. She attended Northwest High School (1970) before moving to Ypsilanti to complete her BS in Education and MA in Counseling from Eastern Michigan University. She was an accomplished teacher having taught grades 1-4 for 25 years. She wholeheartedly believed in her student’s potential to navigate any challenge that could threaten their success. It was not uncommon for Carol to advocate on behalf of the young minds under her care. She was determined to see that each child received the best education possible. She was much loved by children and parents alike and was regularly visited by former students who wished to share their appreciation for her dedication throughout her career.

Carol was a deeply committed mother. She bore six children and prayed for their protection every day. To Carol, her children were her greatest joy, her greatest source of pride. Phone calls and messages of encouragement were daily occurrences as was the random voicemail that simply said “I love you.”
Carol was a devoted wife to her husband, Doug. It was in the fall of 2018 that Carol and Doug finally realized their dream and built their home in Monterey, Tennessee. After being quickly embraced by their new community, Carol formed significant bonds with her neighbors and fellow church members.
Carol’s commitment to her faith was unyielding. Her walk with God was celebrated and revered throughout her entire life. Her family takes comfort knowing that Carol is finally with her Lord.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents, George and Josephine Hillard and her son, Benjamin (1990).

She is survived by her husband, Doug Engle; brothers Tom (Kris) and Michael Hillard; her children – Jennifer Ellis, Heather (Jason) Jach, Eric (Susan) Walton, Jessica (Travis) Daugherty, and Brittany (Christopher) Huebner.

In addition to her nieces, Carol leaves behind thirteen grandchildren.

Celebrations of life will take place in Monterey and in Ypsilanti, MI. Dates will be forthcoming.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a gift to the Student Advocacy Center of Michigan (http://www.studentadvocacycenter.org/).
